ADDRESSING SOCIAL ISSUES

Welcome to the world of liberalistic worldviews. Welcome to India, our mother land, whose heritage extends to over 5000 years. We're a people of values and reverence, we encourage foreigners to respect our Indian values. We welcome foreign corporations to sell their products in India, and we encourage them to so with a conscientious attitude. We encourage imaginative and creative advertising but we encourage it to be sensitive of our ethnicity and not bring suggestive advertisements with degenerate and repulsive displays that annihilate and derail the thought process of young India.

Young India is a generation that is educated, we're a generation that is innovative and we seek parameters for rising and not for destruction. Young India wants to be free and how can we be free when we're held captive with provocation of sensuality that is out of context and out of natural human design? In the context of globalisation and emergence of cultural adaptation, young Indians want to stand on par with other cultures but we're still sensitive to what we stand for.

We live in a generation where we're no longer scared of MNC's but we buy them out. We live in a generation where we're no longer scared of perversions, but we challenge them. We're a young generation that is patriotic to this Nation. We no longer strive to settle in other countries for better lives, we create a better India.

Unfortunately there is some times a schizophrenic personality in our young society that is totally against the above description of young India. How has this aping happened? Well, let's read the following to understand how perversion after perversion is creeping into India.

On Saturday the 4th May, while I was walking on Brigade road along with Xavier, after visiting a computer store, we we're traumatized to see a huge display poster at the LEE showroom that was stuck right outside on the glass visible to the public. The poster carried the scene of two teenage girls embracing each other in a sensual and lesbian attitude in the momentum of kissing each other on the lips or at least teasing the mind to think so. The caption read "NOT EVERYTHING IS AS STRAIGHT!!!" The meaning that several sociologists say is that LEE promotes that "Lesbianism is straight, but the jeans are straighter"

As Sunil Jose, Program Director of Morelove.in was on Brigade road; he encountered the advertisement and was curious. So he entered to the store and spoke to Mr. Vincent who claimed to be the store manager of the Lee showroom located at Brigade road. Mr. Vincent told Sunil that this product was a part of the 'summer collections'. In further dialogue, Vincent said that there were other people enquiring about the poster and its ambiguous meaning. He stated that he had mailed the head office for clarification on the meaning of the poster, but has not yet received a response.

On Monday the 7th May I had spoken to Sourav, who said that he was the Marketing Manager. He said that he had informed his boss and would revert back to me the next day by 10:30 am. I had appealed to him to reconsider the concept and invited him to remove the poster. He agreed that it is provoking. I further told him that if he did not take to opportunity to consider removal and not get back to me at the suggested time, I would consider taking the appropriate action. In justification, Sourav told me this "if you look at the newspapers like Bangalore Times, they have all sorts of vulgar presentations, why is there no cry about that?" As one person said, "The Bangalore Times is now a part of pornography" Sourav has not yet gotten back to me.

I have been using the Lee brand for over twenty years. My friends and I and their family and friends have committed to never ever purchasing a LEE product again. We will also discard any product that carries the LEE tag.

In the meanwhile, we had called together a consultation of ecumenical leaders and sociological experts of the Indian society to get their views and everyone had the same say that irresponsible advertising is against our values as Indians.

Counsellors around the city have been at a loss in counselling so many cases of lesbianism due to experimentation. It's not that all of them are lesbians; it's just that they have experimented with it and are finding it hard to get out of it. Many young marriages have been on the threshold of separation and rupturing due to these patterns. India does not have the capacity or expertise to deal with these areas of sociological concerns.

In an interview with Margaret Alva, General Secretary and MP, AICC, she said this to me "… America has no solutions for their own problems, leave alone network. Wherever they have gone, they have left destruction in land whether it is Vietnam, Iraq, wherever they have gone." The same applies to the LEE brand. They don't seem to have the right solutions for creative branding but causing destruction.

The Lee display is only inviting more cases of sexual assault of the same sex. Females who have been afflicted with the SSA (Same Sex Attraction syndrome) have sexually assaulted other females in an attempt to seek gratification. Personally I have counselled several girls who have been victims of this SSA syndrome and victims of assault which eventually lured them into becoming SSA's themselves. The Lee brand has encouraged sexual delinquency.

Dr. Siga Arles, a leading expert in our country on Sociology and Missiology and the Director of the Indian Institute of Missiology - Research Centre, commented. "The poster is repulsive and degenerate with its suggestiveness. For the youth who walk the Brigade road, this is ill informing and misleading. This should be challenged by the public who believe in values of culture, family and marriage. Degeneracy is made look posh, contemporary and acceptable and a time has come when such is made a part of human right. Lesbian and Gay Liberation is not part of human right but a part of human illness that needs corrective and healing. Public display of such posters is unwelcome in decent society."

When we dialogued with sets of young people ranging from ages fifteen to twenty seven, their response was that this promotion was provoking and suggestive. They further stated that advertisements like this only cause a young generation to experiment things that should not be experimented. Danstan John, a youth worker among juvenile drug addicts and gangsters says that this sort of promotion that sets standards of being cool is what's causing a rupturing in our India society. If you're out there working on the streets, you would know that. The Lee Company has been insensitive to our Indian culture.

The Archbishop of Bangalore Most Rev. Dr. Bernard Moras told me yesterday that this sort of promotion is insensitive to our culture at large. He further indicated that Indians of all beliefs should join together against such immoral campaigns. Young people who believe in values should protest against ideologies.

Dr. J. Mohan Razu, a leading sociologist and professor at UTC who has been an International voice for social causes says this: "Product promotion through unethical means need to be contested. Multinationals for the sake of profit maximization resort to all sorts of means."

Bangalore's leading Philosopher, BP Naresh and father of a girl child commented by saying "Very obviously, the intentions are clear, if not promoting at least a soft corner for lesbianism, what has the product got to do with the picture...? I don't see any connection at all. Very appropriately, a boy and a girl would have suited the product promotion... but this appears to be very shady. I don't think this is oversight at all. This looks very deliberate."

Mark Braganza, a Chartered Accountant and a father of six including a teenager daughter has this to say: "I feel that the attached photograph is suggestive of lesbianism. I suggest that action should be taken against the company on more than one count. The counts which I can think of are: (1) Taking up the matter with' The Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI)', on the grounds of indecency. There may be other grounds too." 2. Filing a public interest litigation against the company.

Cherian, Director a Resort, a father of three including a teenage daughter comments, "Yes, the picture clearly suggests lesbianism. I am with you if you are planning some campaign against this."

The call is ours, we need to speak out. Some of us already have. Let's hear your voice, write to us with your views. Email info@morelove.in.

Dominic Dixon was a guest on the NDTV “INDIA 60 MINUTES” program. He was interviewed on “Gayism in India”. He spoke from the Psychological and Sociological dimensions of Gayism. Dominic loves those who are Gay, but does not endorse gayism.

“…Righteous and Justice are the foundation of His throne..” Psalm 97:2

The story below is to challenge every Christian to stand for social justice. It is also to give hope to those who are oppressed. We at MoreLove, take no credit for what God has chosen to do in and through us. It is the working of our Lord Jesus Christ and glory be to Him alone.

It was a gruesome scene that we encountered when we reached the hospital on that tragic day on the 7th of May 2008. Mr. Norohna, aged 76 years (a retired manager from HAL and an active member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society) was brutally beaten and injured. Mr Norohna who had already undergone two cardiac surgeries was assaulted mercilessly by his neighbours, Mr. Naidu and family, for the sole reason that he resisted their attempt to encroach on his own property that he had owned for more than 40 years. Mrs. Norohna, 72 years, a retired school teacher was in a state of shock, fearing for their lives. Added to this, the police officials were not in a position to help the victims because the Karnataka assembly elections were just a couple of days away and they had been assigned to ensure that law and order was maintained.

At MoreLove, we were infuriated to see the utter contempt that was shown by the perpetrators of the crime. The sheer barbarity with which these innocent lives were being violated, exasperated us. The police department seemed to be reluctant to help in this time of need for diverse reasons that are best known to them. Knowing that our God is a God of righteousness and justice, we decided that something had to be done and plunged right in. Sunil Jose, the Program Director of MoreLove was assigned the task of investigating the case and ensuring that no stone was left unturned in the pursuit for justice.

The task that lay ahead of us was an uphill and arduous task for various reasons.

Firstly, the Norohna’s were severely shaken. This wasn’t their first experience with such injustice. In the past six years, they were repeatedly subjected to verbal abuse.  On at least two earlier incidents they were violently beaten causing physical injury and grave mental trauma. On one such violent encounter the daughter-in-law of the Norohna’s was assaulted. There was also an outrage of her modesty. During all these turbulent times, the Norohna’s hardly had any support even from the Church which is the tangible body of Christ. Subsequently, their faith in God was shaken, they began to question God. We constantly remained in close contact with them. We assured them our every support and prayed with them.

Secondly, the law enforcing mechanism posed a huge challenge. If you have any experience dealing with these agencies here, you’ll know what we’re talking about.

We investigated the entire case and prepared a detailed report containing the history of the entire case. Having found the Police authorities to be delinquent in their duties, we decided to approach the Lok Ayukta. Dr. Dominic Dixon (criminal psychologist) submitted his psychological & sociological evaluation of the entire case, after a detailed study. We helped the Norohna’s to draw up a formal complaint. We then approached His Excellency, the Governor of Karnataka, The Commissioner of Police for Bangalore and the chief of Lok Ayukta, Justice Hegde. The Upa Lok Ayukta chief, Mr. Gowda was very courteous and helpful. He directed the police inspector to furnish a report and provide us all necessary support.  (Lok Ayukta, is a government internal affairs agency that investigates the delinquency of government officials)

We then filed a case against the accused. We knew that the Law would take its own time; we were prepared to wait.

We soon got our first breakthrough; a warrant against the accused. The accused went into hiding for over a fortnight only to surface again and surrender to the police. He was later released on bail.

The Governor replied to our report and directed the Home Ministry to look into the matter.

A few days back the main accused died suddenly of a heart attack. We had always prayed for their conversion and continue to do so. Our sympathies lie with the family.

The Inspector of police Mr. Devaya, submitted a formal report to Dr. Dominic Dixon, citing all the action that has been taken against the perpetrator. We find them satisfactory.

The matter now will be resolved in the courts.

Our greatest reward however is to see the Norohna’s slowly getting back to normal life. Their faith in God has been restored and they are relieved. They are at peace and feel secure.

In summary, we have been very enriched by the whole experience and have learnt many valuable lessons, a few of which are enlisted below.

  1. God hates injustice and for the Christian, it is not merely an option but an obligation to help those who suffer injustice.
  2. Fighting for the cause of truth and justice is one of the surest ways of witnessing the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
  3. God is a God of justice, vengeance belongs to Him. We ought to wait for his vision and provision and continue to do what is truthful and honest. He is able to deliver.
  4. We ought to fear God and not man.
  5. We may have many weapons to our disposal such as influence in high places, wealth, intellect and cunning. However, we ought to put our trust in the name of the Lord.
  6. Whatsoever we do in pursuit for justice must be within the precepts of Gods Law that has been revealed in His Word.
  7. We ought to always pray for our oppressors. Our aim is not so much his conviction by law, but his conviction by the Holy Spirit.
  8. The Law may seem impotent and inefficient to defend us but in effect is a very powerful tool for social reform. It is our ignorance of the Law that often causes our downfall. It may be time consuming and laborious but within the law are sufficient provisions to ensure our safety.

The hand of the Lord has done mighty things. He has vindicated the oppressed and given them justice. All glory be to the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

MORE JUSTICE, MORE LOVE ,MORE JESUS.

Staff Report, Goa.

Very often in our lives, we hear cries for help, and it is the freedom given by God to each one of us to hasten to the cries of those in need or to just to ignore them. - Nancy Dias.

In October, 2007 Nancy Dias, Country Director of MORELOVE, Kuwait, got a phone call only to hear from the caller, requesting Nancy to pray for a Goan lady. Alice (name changed) who was working in Kuwait as a house, maid, was under house arrest, , by her Kuwaiti employer. "What could prayer alone do if I do not act on the situation?" was the question Nancy asked herself.

Nancy and Albert, the Program Director of MORELOVE, Kuwait held an emergency meeting and immediately escalated the case to Dominic Dixon, Executive Director of MORELOVE, who was in Kuwait on a mission. Dominic, replied saying– "sister we need to do something for our Indian brethren in Kuwait, especially working as house maids." Immediately, the office had communicated with the Indian Embassy in Kuwait, for an appointment with the Indian Ambassador. As usual it is not easy to connect with the Ambassador due to his busy schedules and the in-between protocols, but when the Embassy officials identified who Dominic was, the Consular General and the Indian Ambassador invited him to the Indian Embassy, cancelling other appointments with ministerial officials.

On the appointed day, the team of MORELOVE met with the Ambassador and the Consular General to discuss about the issues of Indian labourers who were raped, tortured and brutally beaten. The meeting was quite intensive while Nancy presented the case of Alice where in the officials encouraged her to carry out a rescue operation but cautioned the team about the dangers involved due to the sociological ideologies in Kuwait. The Embassy officials assured Nancy that they would provide shelter ONLY if the maid comes to the Embassy on her own and only then they could repatriate her. ----- How could Alice escape from the employer when she is locked up in one of the company’s small room amongst the cockroaches who were her only visitors?

The reason for the employer to lock her up was because her fiancé who was also working for the same employer had fled the country after unethical practices. For this reason, Alice had to bear such punishment.

The thought of this young girl of 25 years suffering reminded Nancy of the invasion of Kuwait. Many painful memories flashed in her mind and she was determined to rescue Alice at any cost.

After much pains taking efforts, Nancy got the contact of Alice’s employer and requested for a meeting with him through his office secretary. This Kuwaiti employer is a businessman is an incessant international traveller.

At this point Nancy was distressed and trusted on the promise of God which says that "The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is upon me and has called me to set the captives free." Nancy went on fasting and praying for God to accomplish His promise in her life so that Alice should be set free from captivity.

This is what Nancy says:

My friends, if I am testifying, it is for the sole purpose of testifying to the work of our God – Jesus Christ who never fails and is always faithful to His promise.

The Promise of God spoken through His prophet Isaiah in chapter 61 was fulfilled in my life.

Alice’s father who is also in Kuwait, having illicit affair, was approached by one of MORELOVE's case workers, to inform him about his daughter’s condition. However, the father along with his illicit partner abused the case worker. When the incident of meeting the father was conveyed to Alice, she wept and thought that even Nancy would not help her. Nancy however assured her, "let the whole world refuse to help you but I will go ahead to get you rescued at any cost."

Very often we feel we are righteous and close our selves from giving a helping hand.

In due course of time the secretary managed to pass Nancy’s message to his boss that she wanted to meet him. As usual, with the secretary’s duty is to collect all the information, Nancy was questioned as to why and what was her reason for the meeting. She told the secretary "I want to meet his boss not with a request for a job but on humanitarian grounds." His reply was that the Boss was out of country and would be in the office only next week. Nancy kept the Ambassador’s office informed about the progress of the investigation she was making. Nancy never received any reply to her emails from the Ambassador’s office, but whenever she phoned the embassy, the Consular General told her "please make sure you do not fall in trouble". He was very protective of Nancy, ‘but what about this sister’s sufferings, thought Nancy?’ ‘Could I just ignore her and pay a deaf ear to help her? No – Never! Never!’

Finally, the long awaited day dawned and Nancy received a call from the secretary saying that the Kuwaiti businessman would be willing to talk over the phone as a personal meeting would not be possible. At this point, Nancy was in dilemma as to how she would convince the Employer without getting to meet with him in person. Nancy and the businessman spoke for about half an hour while Nancy patiently listened to his concerns. He advised Nancy that he will not release the maid unless she completes her two years contract. Nancy, a disciple of Christ, intervened and apologised on behalf of Alice and her fiancé and requested him to release her indicating that MORELOVE would take care of all the transitions and that the Embassy would accommodate the maid. Nancy’s second request was to be allowed to visit the maid.

God has the knack of changing a heart of stone, into a heart of flesh. The heart of the businessman moved, after Nancy had appealed and apologised to him. He replied saying, ‘well I have decided to release her, provided she pays for her air ticket as she has not completed her two years of contract.’ Also, the businessman granted Nancy permission to visit Alice on condition that she comes alone, although she had requested that a case worker would accompany her.

Before talking to the employer, Nancy had informed the Goan Welfare Society (GWS) President and his reply to Nancy was – "Oh it’s a critical case…. please keep me informed."

So on the appointed day, Nancy had visited Alice and witnessed her miserable condition - all pale and in fear, weeping profusely. Nancy embraced her as a mother would embrace a child that has just been released from a hostage situation. The only words of Alice at that time were – "sister, do not leave me". Nancy spent quality time with Alice, counselled her and led her to forgive those who have humiliated her and violated her rights as a human being. The most difficult and crucial moment for Nancy was when it was time to give her back to the security personal, they both hugged each other as they wept. Nancy assured her that she will be out from her captivity soon and to continue praying. It was as if I was leaving my own child behind, says Nancy.

During Nancy’s calls to the office, the Kuwaiti was interested to know which organisation or association she was representing. When inquired by the secretary, Nancy's gentle response was "MISSION OF JESUS CHRIST".

Nancy and Albert had purchased the ticket as Alice did not have enough money to meet the cost of the ticket.

The delegation from the State of Goa, headed by Hon’ble Eduardo Faleiro, Commissioner for NRI affairs was in Kuwait for this event. GWS President along with the Indian Ambassador had invited the officials of MORELOVE to attend this meeting of the NRI delegation held at the Carlton hotel to present our case studies and the case in context. The case of Alice was presented to His Excellency in the presence of the delegation. Mr. Faleiro, amazed at the dedicated efforts of MORELOVE, committed and assured that the Embassy would reimburse the ticket money which was eventually done.

Alice was released as promised by the employer. Nancy and Albert ensured that they would be allowed to meet Alice at the airport, which they did to confirm her safe departure. Alice is now in Goa.

On behalf of MORELOVE, Nancy take’s this opportunity to first of all thank God Almighty who helped and protected her to rescue Alice from captivity. Also, MORELOVE are grateful for our State of Goa delegation headed by Mr. Faleiro. MORELOVE also thanks Ms. Sabina (Bailancho Saad – Women’s Voice) and pray to God such frequent visits by Indian delegates will continue reaching our Indian community in various regions of the Gulf.

Ms. Sabina has a great vision for the Goan women in Kuwait, especially those in distress. She promised her strong support to Nancy and assured her of her help to reach out to the Goans in Kuwait. Thank you Sabina.

After all that is said and done, if the maid had to be an American, how would the American Embassy have reacted? This was the question that Dominic had asked the Indian Ambassador and the Political Ministers of India who did not have a concrete answer. Living in an age, says Dominic, where the awareness of human rights is at it's peak with India having a great economical and political structure, why isn't the Indian government able to reach out to it's citizens that live abraod? What are the politicians doing? Take a look at the behaviour of the airport staff at Kuwait towards our Indians and you will immediately notice that Indians are treated like "maafi" meaning "dog" in Arabic. Dominic is in direct contact with the office of the President of India strategising streams of deliverance to rescue our Indians abroad.

Dominic's words of exhortation: We look at the macroscopic level of injustice towards people, especially children. But, on the microscopic level, we employ these little children at our homes, bakeries and factories sometimes in the guise of helping them. If we really want to help little children, then, we need to adopt them or send them to school. Let us put off looking at the world of injustice with a microscope while looking at ourselves with a telescope.

Before concluding, the Goan community and it's leaders, thanks Dominic Dixon, Executive Director of MORELOVE for his initiative and thoughtfulness and the tremendous prayers and support to help the Goan Community. We appreciate his selfless act and sacrifice and risking his own life for the lives of others.
